A Victorian Treasure

The 1874 Point Fermin Lighthouse is one of the most recognized landmarks of the South Bay. This Victorian structure was built with bricks and lumber brought around Cape Horn by sailing ships. Before its lights were extinguished in 1941 as protection against enemy attacks, an electric light projected a beam twenty two miles out to sea.. After the war, radar and direction finders were used.

Volunteers built a new lantern and gallery and restored the building in 1974. The lighthouse is now the residence of the park superintendent.

A palatial structure in Pt. Fermin Park.
